Facial veins are those small red and blue lines that become visible on the skin’s surface. They are a fairly common problem.
Causes of Facial Veins
There are many reasons why facial veins might develop, including:
- Rosacea
- Hormonal fluctuations
- Sun exposure
- Heredity
- Trauma to the skin
- Topical Steroid use
In some cases, facial veins may be a symptom of an underlying medical condition, such as liver Disease, lupus or genetic conditions. However, most cases of facial veins are harmless and are primarily treated for cosmetic reasons.
Treatment for Facial Veins and Diffuse Redness.
Effective treatments for facial veins include laser and IPL procedures that target the small veins under the surface of the skin while minimizing any damage surrounding skin or tissue. Using wavelength of light that is absorbed more by blood vessels than other structures in the skin, energy heats the affected vessel, causing it to shrink and fade from view. Blood is rerouted through healthy veins nearby, while the treated blood vessel is eventually reabsorbed by the body. Treatment is performed as an outpatient procedure. Topical anesthetic, though usually not needed, may be applied to the skin prior to treatment to enhance patient comfort. After laser treatment, the skin may be red and sensitive to the touch. Sun exposure should be avoided for a number of days so that it does not interfere with the healing process. Results of laser and IPL treatment for facial veins may be seen right away and may continue to improve over the next few days. Patients may require more than one treatment session to achieve best results.
