Microdermabrasion for Gentle Skin Resurfacing

Most surface skin discolorations are caused by mild injury or acne scarring, sun exposure, and age spots. As long as these are not too deep and affect the supporting tissue beneath the skin, they can be treated using resurfacing techniques. Microdermabrasion, also known as a diamond peel, is an effective way of treating these skin discolorations. It is a mildly abrasive procedure that may not require the use of scrub pads.

It is also completely repeatable, meaning that subsequent treatment sessions can be scheduled less than one month apart. If you are a mature adult who wishes to improve the overall tone of your facial skin without surgery or fillers, consider a microdermabrasion procedure.

An Exfoliating Peel Procedure

Peels are treatments involving the removal of the upper epidermal layer. This layer tends to replace itself about once a month, so a non-chemical peel such as microdermabrasion is the least invasive method of smoothing out the epidermis and minimizing the appearance of discoloration spots. This treatment may involve the use of fine crystal particles.

The crystal powder may be sprayed directly onto the skin surface using a wand connected to a pressure motor. The powder, under high pressure, lifts away the upper level of skin and at the same time exfoliates by removing small foreign particles that are blocking skin pores.

How to Prepare for Microdermabrasion

The handpiece and vacuum may be connected to a motor and monitor. The crystals are loaded into the motor assembly and blown through the connecting tube. We may place a pair of goggles over the eyes to prevent exposure to any crystals that might be blown off the skin surface.

The entire procedure may take a short amount of time. The upper layer of skin is gently lifted away, and new skin growth is immediately stimulated. The open pores of the skin can now breathe much easier, and any discoloration caused by scarring is significantly reduced.

After Treatment

The skin may remain a light pink because of the mild irritation that causes excess blood to flow to the skin. This is normal and will disappear in a day or two.

For best results, we usually schedule series of treatment sessions. This helps the new skin growth to become smoother over time, with less and less of the original discoloration returning after each treatment.
