5 Reasons to Consider a Chemical Peel

Your skin tells a tale — whether that’s sun damage, aging, or other skin concerns.

You can rewrite your story and rejuvenate your skin, address blemishes, and reduce the signs of aging with a chemical peel.

Chemical peels are a skin-resurfacing treatment, and they’re available here at the Center for Dermatology in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Take a moment as Adbul Hafeez, MD,  Erica Still PA-C, Lissett  Aesthetician explain what chemical peel options are available and five reasons you should consider one.

Learn more about chemical peels

Chemical peels are a type of chemical exfoliation treatment. Unlike a salt scrub or microdermabrasion, for example, that uses physical exfoliation to slough away dead skin, peels rely on a blend of chemical solutions to remove the outermost layers of dead skin.

The Center for Dermatology offers several types of chemical peels, including:

Each peel works in the same general way. Our aesthetician applies the solution to your skin and allows it to sit and soak into your skin. Some peels penetrate more deeply than others. Over the next few days, collagen turns over, and the outermost layers of skin could flake and peel off — hence the name chemical peel.

You don’t have to choose your peel on your own though. Our providers review your goals with you, examine your skin, review your skin type, and recommend the right treatment for you.

5 reasons to consider a chemical peel

Now that we’ve covered what chemical peels are and how they work, let’s unpack the five reasons you should consider one.

  1. Improve your skin tone and texture

Chemical peels improve your skin texture and tone. The treatment works by exfoliating the outer layers of your skin and removing dead cells. If you have uneven pigmentation, age spots, rosacea, or sun damage, a chemical peel can help to lighten and balance your skin tone.

The result? A fresh, even appearance and smoother skin!

  1. Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Collagen is a protein that gives your skin structure and strength, and when you don’t have enough, you’re more prone to fine lines and wrinkles.

Luckily, when you get a chemical peel, it stimulates collagen production. As your collagen production ramps up, you’ll notice a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles & plumper skin.

  1. Minimize acne and acne scarring

If you’re struggling with acne and/or acne scarring, you know how frustrating, and more resilient it can be. Chemical peels offer a one-two punch when it comes to acne. They help prevent acne and help reduce the appearance of scars you already have.

Here’s how: first, chemical peels help unclog your pores. When the outermost layer of skin is sloughed away, it’s easier to clear out clogged pores — a key part of acne prevention since clogged pores often lead to acne breakouts.

Second, your peel promotes new cell turnover which then helps reduce the appearance of acne scars and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

  1. Reduce the signs of sun damage

Sun exposure can lead to a variety of skin issues, including dark spots, wrinkles, and a rough texture. Chemical peels are effective in:

Chemical peels can also remove actinic keratosis, a type of precancerous lesion caused by sun exposure. Dr. Hafeez & Erica Still, PA-C also offers treatments for actinic keratosis, including topical medication, cryotherapy, and curettage.

  1. Require minimal downtime

Compared to more invasive procedures (such as plastic surgery), chemical peels generally require far less downtime. Your Center for Dermatology provider gives you specific post-peel instructions. Getting started with a chemical peel
